When returning from interruption
When returning from your interruption of study you will need to re-register. If you are funded by Student Finance England (SFE), the University will notify them when you have re-registered. Some key ponts:
- Any part of an academic year attended counts as a full year of SFE funding, however, funded students are generally entitled to one year of funding in addition to the length of their course.
- For example, if you're studying a regular 3-year undergraduate degree, you may be entitled to a fourth year of funding. This is dependent on you not having had prior study and is given entirely at the discretion of Student Finance England.
- It is recommended that you contact Student Finance to discuss any additional year of funding needed.
You will find more detailed information and advice on the University website here - go to the section titled 'Returning from Interruption'.
NHS Learning Support Fund (LSF)
Nursing & Midwifery Students - Am I entitled to continued NHS LSF payments during my interruption?
This varies depending on your personal circumstances and is managed by the NHS Business Services Authority - there are lots of helpful answers on their website here. If you are a nursing or midwifery student when your interruption starts, the University of Salford will tell the NHSBSA about the changes to your attendance.
Disability - The NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) and Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) may agree to continue payments of the NHS LSF if you're absent because of your disability, as defined by the Equality Act 2010. The NHSBSA and DHSC may also agree to continue payments of the NHS Learning Support fund if you need more time to complete your course, where doing so amounts to a reasonable adjustment.
Maternity or adoption leave - You may be entitled to up to 12 months maternity or adoption leave during your interruption where you continue to receive NHS LSF payments.
Paternity or adoption leave - You may be entitled to up to 4 weeks maternity or adoption leave where you continue to receive NHS LSF payments.
If you are unsure whether you are entitled to continued payments during your interruption, contact the NHS LSF team - they can then contact the University if they need further information. The NHSBSA consider additional funding requests on a case by case basis within 25 working days.
Will I receive NHS LSF payments when I return or repeat part of the year?
The NHSBSA explain in lots of detail whether additional NHS LSF funding is available to nursing and midwifery students when extending their course - it depends on the reason you need additional funding. Find out more here
A new NHS LSF application / additional funding request can only be made by the University once you've restarted active study i.e. after your return date to University.
If a student is repeating a year for a retake of academic/practice modules, the NHS Business Services Authority will not consider requests for repeat if there are no other personal mitigating circumstances.
